Gross.
So some of you know that I happen to be on a dating website. It’s part social experiment, part time-passing entertainment, and part curiosity to see if this actually works in a city full of people. You should know that while there are plenty of nice, decent people on here…this happens too: On Oct. 29 from “Matt” Hello again. I’m not sure if you missed the first...

This is going to be a long one.
On Friday, Miguel Calderon gave the guest lecture at campus. He previously attended the school, is quite cute, and also did this little painting (which he actually doesn’t like very much): Perhaps you, indie friend, recognize it? Anyway, he was great. During the lecture, I received a text from Chenoa who has been on a month long tour of the US and just returned. I hurried on over to the...

Froyo, yo.
I like to think no one minds when I stop into Cocoabella on my days off just to hang out…mainly because I buy everyone yogurt. But this was a revelation. See that fish-egg looking bubble? It’s a bubble-popper, a small sphere of delicious fruit juice in a thin membrane that pops when you eat it. I gotta get my hands on some of those.

"Your freedom's in a bind."
I am having….an unfortunate day. Minor medical emergency this morning that has since evolved into a more panic-inducing medical emergency that is currently evolving. Sigh. Must go to doctor in the morning. Thank goodness one of my roommates is a doctor and his girlfriend stockpiles medication. So that aside, I also worked and then, in class, got the troubling suspicion that my professor...

I saw this article on Lena Chen’s website after seeing the picture of her with other emerging young conservative feminists for More Magazine. I like her. And maybe because she’s Asian, maybe because she graduated from Harvard, maybe because her college sex-blog was a spin on “Sex and the City” (called “Sex and the Ivy), or maybe because she has some really cute shoes...

Collecting Culture: The Sotheby’s Model                 Do art collectors have an interest in the artwork or in the investment of art? I argue that private art collection from a Western, especially North American perspective, has little to do with artistry and everything to do with commodity as produced by a capitalist hegemony. Sotheby’s Auction House is a testament to a system of object...

Dear random dating website guy:
When you say you want a girl who is “intelligent, but not too intelligent”, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean a girl who can discuss Kant but not Derrida? Do you mean a girl who can figure out the fastest way off a deserted island, but who doesn’t read Thoreau? Do you mean a girl who can solve geometry problems in 3 seconds but who doesn’t talk about them at parties? ...

Cyclical arguments, indeed.
Reading Henri Lefebvre’s Production of Space. Soooooo…if I understand this correctly, the first chapter is his discourse on the way linguists discuss language using a self-referential language as their discourse? Well. I’m going to write my critique as a discourse on his language for discussing language discourse’s language. And I’m going to throw in some “I...

Quotation Station
Welcome to my life for the next 2 months: I have almost one page of my Critical Histories of Museums paper done. There’s probably some stuff there that could be edited out and other stuff that could be expanded upon, but I’m just happy to have that. You might be asking, “but Candace, haven’t you been working on this for the last 3 days?” And I would reply,...

Let's get down to business.
A very interesting day. Made it out to Pacific Heights to see the Kramlich collection. Their massive, beautiful, but not so tastefully decorated house has media art installations all smack dab in the living spaces. A little odd. Saw some beautiful Bill Viola pieces, though Rudolph (my prof) was less than fond of him. Afterward, we had class discussion in a cute little cafe where I promptly...

Is there anything in the whole world as nice as new crisp, white sheets on your bed in a clean and organized room dripping with warmth and comfort? No? How about blueberry tea and tiny cream puffs? God, it’s good. Unfortunately, I think all that sugar and fat from my earlier cheeseburger hindered my ability to sleep. I stayed up until 4 AM. But! I read an article for school,...

This is the last one today, promise.
My despair at giving away so many of my books pre-move is slowly ebbing as my bookshelf gets fuller. And there is something so satisfying about having more art books on my shelves than fiction now. (Also I’m kind of in love with my new theme. And the cool streampad thing.)

Reminding myself why I picked art history.
Guess who found her slides from AP Design in high school. I wish I had a slide projector. My concentration was fish, which will be obvious in a few more slides. My little sun-fish in acrylic. Acrylic. All I remember was splattering a lot of paint around and marking leaves and using mesh. This one I really actually loved and wish you could see better. I made my friends doodle in class, but...

Baby photo lulz.
Lookie at what I found: In China, fear of infant death by sweatering is at an all-time high. My grandmother, grandfather, cousin Jason, and my own displeased self. I wish I could remember where this was. Yep. That’s me. Apparently I had a thing for bubbles as a child. Paul Rudd knows what I’m talking about. I think I’m freaking out about that badly tanned and...

An inventory of economy.
I’m in the process of cleaning my room. Currently Brigitte Bardot’s “Tu Veux ou Tu Veux Pas” is playing. I was looking at the insanity of my closet and began an inventory count. I own approximately: 26 Pairs of shoes 25 Necklaces 22 Belts/Sashes (I have almost as many belts as necklaces…really?) 9 Coats/Jackets 10 Cardigans 16 Skirts 12 headbands 9 lounging...

I was in the subway station when I thought I smelled you. And in the brief second before I knew it couldn’t possibly be true, I thought of everything I wanted to say based on every memory I had, and how nothing I could say would ever be quite right. When the second passed, and I woke up, I think I almost cried. Then that moment passed and I remembered where I am now. (But I still wish you...

Learning cool things all the time.
So some fellow students did their presentations today, and John-Mark’s was especially “ooh and ahh”-y. I’m totes jelli of his power point skills. Also, he showed us cool stuff. Internet museum. Is it possible...
…to sustain myself on the vague musings and blind hope fluttering in my heart? Can I overcome my new, grounded insecurities solely by the will of my own spirit? I think I can. I think I can. But goodness gravy, I’m so scared to start my research tomorrow. Tentative concepts (I realize no one who might read my tumblr cares, but I do dammit): Global Perspectives of Modernity-...

A sudden and sobering thought.
Trying to get through a Rosalind Krauss essay on video performance art/reflexiveness/narcissism. I understand the words, I can picture the pieces, but I can’t critically think through the concepts. I’d be hard pressed to describe what the argument is, I have no basis for comparison, and I feel very, incredibly just…lost. What if I can’t do this? How am I supposed to make...

She's just being....Ke$ha?
So I was just watching two of Miley Cyrus’s new music videos and um…when did she turn into a weird Ke$ha/Lohan hybrid*? I mean, I’ve never been a fan but I was all like “yeah, she’s all wholesome and whatnot”. Dammit, I hate to be wrong. Wilmer Valderrama is counting down the days until she turns 18. That’s a sweet gold bustier/corset thing she’s...

Labyrinth is STILL good.
I barely remembered anything from childhood,  but I can definitely now appreciate how good David Bowie looks in those pants. Girl’s Night on Friday was great. It’s Fleet Week, which is interesting. We had a lecture with a screening of Robert Adanto’s film Pearls on the Ocean Floor and a Q&A with him afterwards. Fantastic film about contemporary Iranian female artists. Then...
