It all began with my birthday, a beautiful night with great friends. I got drunk, kissed my boyfriend, went home, and was violently ill with food poisoning.

Fast forward to the next evening, weak and uncomfortable, said boyfriend comes over, and I, in a fit of passion tell him that now that I am 25, I am going to take control of my life and be happy.

So, a few days after receiving radiation therapy for my brain tumors and a whirlwind birthday weekend later…he promptly breaks up with me.

The next morning, I get news from my parents in China that my sister, who has been dealing with heart problems her whole life and was delivered to China for help from the doctor who did her first surgery at 1 year old, is now in ICU following yet another surgery.

I find that in the midst of crying, my back molar with an old filling begins to hurt. I cry and cry until my nose bleeds while talking to previously mentioned ex-boyfriend that I can no longer tell my problems to.

I do not sleep because the pain in my tooth hurts so badly.

I go to work. I do not sleep again last night.

I got to work today. I cannot chew and have tried every remedy possible to fix the toothache. I make an appointment with a dentist who will later inform me that I have to get a root canal and a crown because my tooth is so infected. Another $1000+ on my every-growing medical bills.

But before I can get to that, let me tell you how my 18 year old cousin was riding her bike down the street in Yangzhou. How she was in college and lovely and on her way to visit my sister with some flowers. Let me tell you that she was hit by a car and my father called to tell me that she died this morning.

And let me tell you now that I do not know what to do.

Art project by Phil Thompson takes blurred copyright-protected images of artworks from the Google Art Project to be recreated by Chinese oil painting services:

The Google Art Project (http://www.googleartproject.com/) contains several paintings which have had a blur filter applied to them so as to make them unrecognisable. Google explain this decison stating that they were, ‘required to be blurred by the museums for reasons pertaining to copyrights.’

After collecting all of these images by taking screenshots and cropping out the blurred images, they were emailed to oil painting reproduction companies in China (chosen for its own issues with internet censorship and for its ongoing difficulties with Google), where they were painted to the scale of the original painting. These reproductions were shipped back to the UK and now become the art work.

This is just the demo for now, but we WILL be releasing a full version eventually where, yes, you can date every one of the losers pictured above!

I remember once, when I was younger, that a boy in my neighborhood died. He was a few years younger than me and it happened when he fell down the stairs or hit his head on the counter. Some kind of accident that happens to kids at that age, I don’t remember.

What I do remember is seeing them cart away the body through my living room windows. The sirens lit up all of our living rooms, and I watched while they carried him over his front yard to the ambulance. I remember that he seemed very small and very alone. The paramedics took their time loading him in the back, because why rush?

Then his mother came out of the house. She stood on the doorstep for a while watching them and swaying a little bit in place. She was wearing a long skirt, tan and fluted and flowing. I really liked that skirt and I know now that she must not have been much older than I am today. When they picked the stretcher up to load him in the back, she ran into the yard and fell to the ground a few feet away from the door. Her husband always kept the grass a little too long. He was a little careless with the yard work. With her long tan skirt spread in the grass around her, it looked like she was planted into the ground—like a tree or a shrub that had always grown from that spot.

I remember too that her face looked very long. She was crying or screaming or both. I remember that I thought the misery carved into the skin of her face was permanent. That she was a small burled monument and would never move again.

Eventually, the father came out and spoke to her while putting his hand around arm. For a minute, it seemed like she wouldn’t get up and how could she? She was petrified wood. But sure enough, he raised her up and she walked back into the house, had legs, was rootless after all.
